Four sons of World War II Air Force veteran George E. Norton and Hattie Merriman Norton of North Harpswell were recognized for their service at an April 29 veterans recognition ceremony at Topsham American Legion Post 202. The family in attendance included, from left, niece Nena Norton, brother Andrew Norton, sisters Hanna Dring and Augusta Duncan, who received a State of Maine Gold Star Award for downed U.S. Air Force veteran Charles E. Norton from retired U.S. Air National Guard Lt. Col. Peter Ogden, right, director of the Maine Veterans Bureau. A press release from the American Legion states that the enemy shot down Norton over waters off the coast of Japan, where he was later captured and executed. The three brothers who survived the war — Pfc. Andrew Norton, U.S. Air Force flight officer Warren Norton, and U.S. Air Force Lt. Walter Norton — also received certificates for their service at the ceremony. (Chick Ciciotte photo)
