BATH — Bath Iron Works spokesman Jim DeMartini confirmed this afternoon that negotiating committees from the shipyard and Local S6 of the Machinist’s union have reached a tentative agreement for a four-year contract.

DeMartini said the Local S6 negotiating committee unanimously endorsed the company’s offer to its membership, which will vote on Sunday at the Augusta Civic Center.

The current contract expires on Sunday.

Local S6 represents more than 3,000 production and maintenance mechanics at BIW.

Formal negotiations began on May 7.

“We’re pleased the negotiating teams have achieved a tentative agreement,” DeMartini said. “We believe this is a fair and equitable offer which provides competitive wages and benefits to our employees while placing the company in a good position to compete for future shipbuilding contracts.”

He declined to discuss specifics about the proposed contract.

Representatives of the union could not immediately be reached for comment today.
