FALMOUTH — Little things. Games are won or lost on such small details.

Such was the case for Wells, which was tripped up on missteps in the field and at the plate, and lost 6-3 to Falmouth, in a WMC softball clash Friday.

The Warriors frittered away an early three-run lead and wound up paying the price .

“I think we’ve got the girls in the right spots,” said Wells coach Kevin Fox, noting the loss of nine seniors from last year’s playoff club. “Now it’s just coming down to consistency. We’ve been battling confidence. And they just need to get a few games under their belts and realize that they can make the plays on either side of the ball in any situation. It’s just a continuing learning process for them, right now.”

Matters started out well for the Warriors (2-7), as they launched out to a 2-0 first-inning lead, then expanded it by a run in the second.

Meaghan Young reached base to start the top of the first, then Lauren Bame walked.

Both runners scored when Sophie Lamb crushed a triple to center field.

In the second, Kaitlyn Tufts worked a lead off walk, took second on Brigitte Boston’s infield out, then came home on Monica Link’s infield single.

However, for Wells, the good times didn’t last long.

The Yachtsmen (3-4) replied with four runs in the bottom of the second, an eruption fueled by an error, and a pair of errant pitches.

“We have the athleticism,” said Fox, “so when we start out fresh, we don’t feel any pressure. So when adversity hits, if we make a mistake in the field, or we walk a couple batters, we’ve been working on trying to handle that better.”

Scoring opportunities grew scarce for the Warriors after that.

They managed to get one runner aboard through the sixth inning.

Falmouth increased its lead with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

“We were able to put some runs together with a couple of hits,” said Yachtsmen coach John Keyes. “Our kids played well from the second inning on.”

Wells made mild comeback noises in the top of the seventh, when it got two runners on with one away.

However, the rally ended when the Yachtsmen pulled off a game-ending double play.

“I think we’ve got our fundamentals lined up,” said Fox. “Now it’s just a matter of fine tuning.”

Wells will return to the field Monday when York will visit.
