To the editor:

I noticed the construction occurring on Maine Street and around the First Parish Church in Brunswick. You may remember a very large, beautiful fir tree was removed for this construction project.

It appears the tree did not need to be removed, yet the cannon is being gingerly attended to for display.

So the destructive symbolism of our culture’s violence is “kill the tree, save the cannon.”

I feel this act should, at the very least, be a huge embarrassment for Brunswick citizens and a sad regret that we had a disregard for life but we’re retaining a symbol of violence that in 2012, we need no reminders of.
