She was loved and respected by all who knew her for her positive attitude and fighting spirit while facing multiple health issues during her lifetime.
Gerri was born in Augusta on November 6, 1938, the daughter of Helen and Lloyd Chapman. She graduated from Gardiner High School, where she excelled in sports. On August 16, 1958 she married Dominic F. Vermette and they eventually settled in Brunswick, where they raised their two sons, Steve and Nick. Gerri was an ardent supporter of her sons in athletics and was involved with the Brunswick High Sports Boosters for many years.
In 1972 Gerri received a kidney from her mother, Helen, in one of the first kidney transplants in the State of Maine. Her goal at the time was to see her sons (then ages 11 and 13) graduate from high school. In 2004 she underwent a second transplant, this time receiving a kidney from her son Steve. She was the longest surviving kidney transplant patient in the state and far surpassed her original goal by attending her grandson’s graduation from college.
Gerri loved being around people and spending time with her husband of 54 years Dom, and traveling with him to Florida to visit their son Steve and his family. She enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s athletic events and hosting family get-togethers at their home.
Although she will be missed by many, Gerri’s spirit will live on in the hearts and memories of those whose lives she touched with her quiet strength and compassionate nature. She is survived by her husband, Dom; her children Steve and wife Kim of Celebration, Florida; Nick and wife Michele of Topsham, Maine; sister Jean and brother-in-law Norman; brother Dick and sister-in-law Cathy; brother Steve and sister in-law Carol; brother David and sister-in-law Jane. Gerri is also survived by her 5 beloved grandchildren, Ryan and Cam Vermette of Topsham and Courtney, Torin and Liam Vermette of Celebration, Florida; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, May12th from 4- 6 PM at Stetson’s Funeral Home, 12 Federal St., Brunswick, where a funeral service will be held immediately following at 6 PM.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Maine, 470 Forest Avenue, Suite 302, Portland, ME 04101-2009. Memorial condolences may be expressed at www.stetsonsfuneralhome.com.
