SCARBOROUGH – Scarborough High School has hired Tony DiBiase to lead the varsity boys basketball team. DiBiase is a longtime high school basketball coach in Maine who has led three teams to state championships, including South Portland in 1992.

The school released the following statement:

Scarborough High School is pleased to announce that the School Board approved the hiring of Anthony “Tony” DiBiase as the Varsity Boys Basketball Coach for the 2012-2013 school year at their regular school board meeting on Tuesday, May 8, 2012.

Coach DiBiase has a long distinguished career as a High School Coach both in Baseball and Basketball. Coach DiBiase, a graduate of the University of Maine at Orono and a multiple sport athlete was a member of the 1976 baseball team that participated in the College World Series. Coach DiBiase has a distinguished career in Maine Basketball as the Coach of the 1982 State Champion Gorham Rams, the 1986 State Champion Portland Bulldogs and the 1992 State Champion South Portland Red Riots.

Coach DiBiase competed in nine western Maine finals, holds eight SMAA league titles and has qualified for tournament play twenty-eight (28) times. Coach DiBiase has been the Maine State Coach of the Year four times and is the recipient of the Maine Basketball Coaches Association award for 400 wins.

We had a very good pool of qualified applicants and the interview committee agreed that Coach DiBiase was certainly the best candidate for the job here in Scarborough, commented Mchael LeGage, Director of Athletics and Student Activities for the Scarborough School Department.

Coach DiBiase joins an outstanding family of coaches here in Scarborough. His expertise will provide our student-athletes with the best opportunity to learn those important life skills essential for success on and off the court, said LeGage.

The Scarborough family of coaches is committed to being teachers first — as we believe that a dynamic program of athletics is a vital component of the educational development of students. The interview committee felt that Coach DiBiase will certainly add to the high quality of coaches here at Scarborough, said LeGage.
