KENNEBUNK — The field was slopping, but the pace was rapid and the hitting quite intense.
All of those elements ”“ weather-wise and otherwise ”“ factored into Kennebunk’s 8-3 triumph over Massabesic in SMAA boys lacrosse action in a driving rain Tuesday.
Six different players scored for the Rams, who improved to 6-1, with Blake Dowe and Harrison Hall accounting for two tallies each.
Massabesic fell to 0-6.
The teams played to a scoreless standoff through a bruising opening nine minutes.
“The guys came out a little tentative,” said Rams coach Dan Seavey. “Maybe they weren’t in full swing because of the weather. They came out and were kind of flat, and maybe pushed the ball too much.”
Dowe, a senior middie, ended the stalemate when he took a lead pass from Clayton Spang and bounced a 20-footer past Mustangs goalie Tyler Fournier, who made nine saves.
Massabesic answered two minutes later with a goal from Pat Wyman.
Wyman and A.J. Gass scooted past the Kennebunk defense, then Wyman cut to the left side, where he received Gass’ pass and rifled it past Rams netminder Ben Bath (13 saves).
Two minutes into the second quarter, Dowe restored the Kennebunk lead with another low shot from close range.
“Blake came in big for us,” said Seavey, “like he does every game. He came in and finished well for us. He did a great job.”
That set off a three-goal run ”“ with Sean Foley and Hall netting the other two goals ”“ which gave the Rams a 4-1 halftime lead.
“We picked it up,” said Seavey, “and we scored some goals. We cleaned it up a little bit.”
The Mustangs gained a little traction in the third quarter, when Jake Desrochers whipped in a high left-hander in the fourth minute to cut the margin to 4-2.
Nick Ames made it 5-2 for Kennebunk, but with three minutes remaining in the quarter, Brandon Colby scored for the Mustangs to stay within two goals.
“We were right where we wanted to be, until the third quarter,” said Massabesic coach Mark Levesque. “We made a couple mistakes with fast breaks where we were going for the stick instead of going for the guy. It cost us.”
Indeed. The Rams’ transition game heated up in the fourth quarter as Foley, Patrick Rimmer and Hall scored, putting the game away.
“We didn’t do the little things right,” said Levesque. “We couldn’t pick up ground balls, couldn’t pass, we just couldn’t get our offense going.”
Massabesic will host Bonny Eagle Thursday while Kennebunk will visit Greely Friday.
