BATH — Capt. Paul Watson, director of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and subject of the television series “Whale Wars,” will speak at the Maine Maritime Museum on Tuesday as part of Friends of Merrymeeting Bay’s annual winter speaker series.

Watson will discuss “Direct Action on the High Seas,” according to a release.

In 1977, Watson founded Sea Shepherd, “an international, nonprofit, direct-action marine wildlife conservation organization specializing in aggressive, but non-violent, interventions against unlawful exploitation of ocean wildlife and habitats,” the release states. The organization opposes illegal whaling, sealing and fishing operations, “and has established itself as the leading marine interventionist group in the world.”

Prior to founding Sea Shepherd, in 1972, Watson cofounded the Greenpeace Foundation (GP).

Watson will speak about his experiences and lessons from more than 30 years sailing under the Sea Shepherd Jolly Roger and will “explore the pressing need for effective advocacy techniques, persistence and passion to save some of the world’s greatest wildlife and ourselves.”
