TOPSHAM

A box truck headed east on Route 196 on Tuesday afternoon left the roadway and struck a telephone pole, snapping it in half, according to Topsham Police. Lt. Christopher Lewis.

Lewis said there were no passengers in the truck and no one was injured in the crash, which was reported at 2:19 p.m. No one will be charged, but power was expected to be out for a couple of hours, Lewis said shortly before 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Gail Rice, a spokeswoman for Central Maine Power, said Tuesday that the crash did not snap a CMP pole but that, pending repair of the broken pole, about 375 customers in Topsham were without power.

Police limited traffic to one lane near the crash for about 20 minutes due to the position of the downed pole for safety reasons, Lewis said.

Topsham Fire and Rescue crews responded.

Lewis said this morning the truck was a delivery truck for Morningstar Stone and Tile of Topsham driven by 37-yearold Michael Mitchell, whose address wasn’t available.

Lewis said Officer Randy Cook, who is investigating the crash, is still working to determine the cause. Speed, alcohol or drugs, or a medical episode do not appear to be factors. Police will determine if a mechanical error might have caused the crash

The delivery truck sustained heavy front-end damage, but Lewis had no cost estimate available this morning.
