BEVERLY, Mass. — First-year Kelly Reid struck out seven and No. 3 University of New England scored runs in the third, fourth and seventh innings to defeat second-seeded Endicott College, 3-0, as the Commonwealth Coast Conference Softball Championship continued Monday afternoon at the EC Softball Complex.
The Nor’easters (24-12) improved to 2-0 in the double-elimination tournament, where they will take on No. 1 Salve Regina University (a 3-1 winner over No. 4 Roger Williams University in Game 9. First pitch in Newport, R.I. is scheduled for about 20 minutes after Thursday’s first matchup ends at about 4:30 p.m.
The Gulls (20-16-1) dropped down to face No. 8 Eastern Nazarene College in an elimination game on Thursday.
Reid allowed four hits and two walks to the defending champions, upping her personal record to 14-4 on the year.
Senior Ashley Gott had two hits and two runs scored to lead the Nor’easters offensively, and junior Erin Grover hit safely on two occasions.
After coming up empty with a pair of two-out singles in the first, and stranding another in the second, UNE grabbed the advantage in the next frame. Gott reached on a lead-off error and moved to second, when junior Casey Brigham dropped a single into right field. Following an out, sophomore Amanda Vaudreuil hit a hard grounder at the shortstop that was misplayed and ended up in left-center, allowing for Gott to come around and make it 1-0.
Gott drove in the Nor’easters’ second run in the fourth with a single through the left side that scored classmate Maegen Johnson from third. Johnson started the inning with a walk and moved forward on a sacrifice bunt and flyout to right.
Endicott put two aboard in the bottom of the fourth, but could not make a dent in the two-run deficit.
In the seventh, Gott began the frame with a single to center and moved to second on a groundout. Grover reached on an infield hit to third base, and, after stealing second, there were runners on second and third. Vaudreuil put down a grounder to second base on the next play, which was deep enough to allow Gott to come in with an insurance run.
A two-out single to right by the Gulls’ Shelby Phillips ”“ her second of the game ”“ was all Endicott could muster as a threat in its last at-bat.
Nell O’Conner took the loss in the circle for the hosts, striking out five.
It was Reid’s second win over Endicott this season, and just the fourth time in the last 27 meetings that the Nor’easters came out victorious. She fanned nine and gave up seven hits when Big Blue posted a 5-1 triumph over the Gulls at home on April 1.
