STANDISH – The Bonny Eagle Scots girls lacrosse team improved to 2-1 on the season after edging the Windham Eagles (0-2) 12-10 on Saturday at Bonny Eagle High School. Sam Campobasso led the way for the Scots, burying eight goals, including the game winner with 6:12 to play.
“How many did she score again? I actually have no idea,” asked Scots coach Judy Martin following the game.
In her defense, it was hard to keep track of Campobasso’s feisty attack on Saturday afternoon.
Whether it was ripping a shot from outside the box or driving to the net, Campobasso could not be stopped. Her performance alone made it feel as if the Scots were playing with an extra attacker for the duration of the second half.
“We talked about at halftime that we needed to pick our game up and pick our passing up and just work as a team,” said Campobosso. “We all did that. Getting those screens helped all of us out.”
Until Campobasso’s explosion in the second half, the Scots were kept surprisingly quiet while the Eagles took control of the game.
After falling behind 2-0 early in the contest, the Eagles roared back to take a 4-3 lead before halftime thanks to two goals and an assist by Bebe Butts.
After the Scots battled back to tie the score at 5-5 early in the second half, the Eagles once again seized control of the contest.
Emily Gilman, Paige Richards and Leaha Chasse each scored for the Eagles within a span of 3:45 to help their team take a three-goal lead.
The Scots, however, would erase the deficit in just more than five minutes.
“In lacrosse, three goals is nothing, you can score a goal in 20 seconds,” said Martin. “If we had been up by three it would have been the same thing.”
Rachel Litif and Jess MacDonald scored 49 seconds apart to pull the Scots to within one before Campobasso tied the score with 12:44 to play.
Haley Batchelder would retake the lead for the Eagles just 20 seconds later only to see Campobasso pull the Scots even in 25 seconds.
Campobasso would give her team their first lead since the 12:04 mark of the first half with 8:32 to play before Butts tied the score again at 7:16.
“I think it boiled down to our passing,” said Martin, addressing her team’s frantic scoring pace in the second. “Our passing was on. And when our defense plays defense with their feet and not the checks, which they started doing at the end of that game, then we don’t lose that ball to those free positions they get. We want them to make the mistakes, not us make the mistakes.”
That’s exactly what happened in the game’s closing minutes as the Eagles defense once again failed to contain Campobasso. She scored her seventh of the game with 6:12 remaining. This time the Scots would not let the Eagles mount a comeback as Campobosso scored her eighth and final goal with 2:54 to play cement the victory.
While Campobasso’s performance was the story of the game, Martin was quick to assert that this win was a team effort.
“It’s all team,” she said. “I know (Campobasso) has got the stick work in there, she’s got the moves. Other players do but she has more finesse about it. When she’s got the ball looking in, it’s like, OK, go for it. They were double-teaming her and making her work hard for it. But when you get other people open, it just works together.”
Jess MacDonald scores the Scots’ seventh goal of the contest after going airborne to shoot over three Eagles defenders.

Bonny Eagle’s Sam Campobasso (14) is congratulated by teammates after scoring her seventh goal of the game late in the second half to give the Scots an 11-10 lead. Campobasso finished with eight goals on the afternoon.
