Cancer support group

Windham Cancer Support Group holds its monthly meeting on Monday, April 30, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Windham Pubic Library, 217 Windham Center Road. The Rev. Timothy Higgins of St. Ann’s Episcopal Church will speak about the loss of a loved one. The group has experienced its first loss in six years of existence. The meetings are usually open to anyone who has been touched in particular by cancer but welcomes anyone who would like to come to participate. For more information, check on Facebook. American Legion meets

On Wednesday, May 2, American Legion Post 148 holds its monthly meeting at the Windham Veterans Center, with social hour and refreshments, working on assembling flags, business and preparations for Memorial Day. Social hour is at 5 p.m., business begins at 6 p.m.

Memorial Day ?flag meeting

On Saturday, May 5, plans get under way for the town’s annual Memorial Day commemoration. Members of the American Legion Post 148 will meet at 7 a.m. at the North Windham Fire Station to establish teams to survey and repair flag holders on utility poles around town. Drug take back

On Saturday, April 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Windham Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your medications for disposal to the Windham Public Safety Building at 375 Gray Road. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Roast beef supper

Windham Hill UCC is holding its popular roast beef supper on Saturday, April 28, from 5-6:30 p.m. The menu includes roast beef, mashed potato with gravy, green beans and more. $8 for adults, $5 for children under 12.

Baked bean supper

Friends Church, Route 202, Windham is hosting a baked bean supper on Saturday, May 5, from 5-6:30 p.m. The menu includes baked beans, brown bread, salads, pies, coffee and punch. $6 for adults and $1 for children under 12.

Bean supper

An all-you-can-eat baked bean supper will be held Saturday, May 5 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at White Rock Community Club, Wilson Road off Route 237, Gorham. Menu offers baked beans, hot dogs, macaroni and cheese, salads, biscuits, homemade desserts and beverages. Adults $7, children $3.

Help for veterans

Dr. Clifford Trott, clinical psychologist and combat veteran, from the Portland Vet Center, offers mental health services to area veterans on the first and third Wednesday each month from 9 a.m. to noon at Windham Veterans Center. These sessions are one-on-one and strictly confidential. Drop-ins are welcome but appointments are recommended. Call 780-3584. The next session will be May 2. To get to the Windham Veterans Center, enter Veterans Memorial Drive off Route 302 between Evergreen Credit Union and Friendly’s and follow to the end.

Help the community

For the hundreds in our town who struggle to make ends meet, Windham Food Pantry and the Clothes Closet are there to help. Donations of funds, food and unneeded clothing are appreciated – and vital to making this facility a valuable resource for many families. With school vacation on the horizon, the food pantry is collecting extra peanut butter and jelly, and lunch and breakfast items for Windham’s children during this time. Also needed are clean, useable clothing. If you would like to make a donation you may drop it off Monday through Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the building right across from Friends Church and next door to the Windham Public Safety Building on Route 202.

Craft Show/Sale

On Saturday, May 5, a Craft Show & Sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Windham Hill United Church of Christ at Windham Hill. All proceeds benefit HOME, a nonprofit organization serving the rural poor in Maine. Items featured include woodwork, leather goods, wooden toys, pottery and many kinds of needlework.

A hunter safety course will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, May 5 and 12, at Windham Public Library. Fee is $5 per person, ages 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult and registrants must attend both days. Pre-registration is required. Call the town clerk at 892-1900.

Church fair

A spring fair will be held at Faith Lutheran Church, Route 302 in North Windham on Saturday, May 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Baked goods, crafts, white elephant table and more, including lunch. Tables are available by calling Mary at 627-7007 or Marcia, 892-3769.

Thrift shop

At North Windham Union Church Thrift Shop, in the basement of the church on Route 302, near the corner of Route 115 is open from 1-3 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday or 10 a.m. until noon Saturdays. Check out the bargains.

Benefits for seniors

A one-on-one counseling session with Owen O’Donnell, a volunteer Benefit Specialist is available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. Officer Jeff Smith, second from left in front row, was selected as this year’s Volunteer Choice Award recipient at the 7th Annual Heroes With Heart Silent Auction & Dinner. In law enforcement since 1984, Smith serves as the Windham High School Resource Officer. He earned the award from the Portland-based Community Counseling Center’s Trauma Intervention Program for his impact on the lives of students and families throughout the community.
