Windham humanitarians raising money for Peru trip
Keanna Stover, an 8-year-old who attends Windham Primary School, and her grandmother, Nancy Callas, are planning to spend the summer doing something different than most second graders. They will volunteer in Cusco, Peru, for five weeks. During this time they will work with orphans and street children. They are volunteering through United Planet, an international nonprofit organization whose goal is to foster worldwide cultural understanding.
In March, Keanna and her grandmother began raising the $10,000 needed for their trip. If you would like to help, donations may be sent to United Planet, 11 Arlington St., Boston, MA 02116. Be sure to note in the memo line the names Nancy Callas and Keanna Stover, and make payable to United Planet. Donations can be made by going online at www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/nancycallas or send donations to Nancy Callas’s office at Back Bay Tower, 401 Cumberland Avenue, Portland, ME 04101.
United Planet’s innovative programs are designed to expose common human bonds, generate respect and appreciation for or cultural, racial, and religious diversity, and enrich lives of our neighbors worldwide.
PWD approves Standish beach memorandum
On Monday night, the Portland Water District Board of Trustees unanimously approved a memorandum of understanding to provide land to Standish for a beach.
The location selected by the Standish Beach Committee is on the Cargill lot on the western shore of the lake. The parcel is outside the 2-mile, no-bodily-contact limit and includes the Sandbar Beach.
The memorandum states that the parties will now work together to develop a beach design, a management plan, and a lease agreement.
“We have been working for several years to provide Standish residents with access to the lake. We are eager to continue moving forward to help establish a beach that recognizes the importance of Sebago Lake as a drinking water supply,” said Portland Water District Trustee William Lunt III.
The memorandum, which was negotiated by the Standish Beach Committee and also approved by the Standish Town Council, calls for a renewable 25-year lease and allows for various recreational opportunities.
