BATH — A 22-year-old Bath man was charged Thursday morning with two counts of burglary of a motor vehicle after police say he broke into cars on Spring and Shaw streets.

Paul A. Freeman Jr., 22, of Bath, was taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset and held on $500 cash bail, according to a release from Bath Police Chief Michael Field.

Police continue to investigate additional reports of similar crimes, and suspect they are related, but have not linked Freeman to the crimes.

Bath Iron Works security reported to Bath police that a man was seen entering a vehicle parked on Spring Street, and witnesses reported that the man fled on a bicycle after they approached the car, Field said.

Police located Freeman, who matched the description given by witnesses, nearby on Washington Street.

He was allegedly intoxicated, according to Field, and was arrested and taken to the police station.

Meanwhile, police received a report that an object had been thrown through a window of a vehicle on Shaw Street, causing $300 damage.

Field said evidence at the scene linked Freeman to the crime, and he was charged with a second count of burglary to a motor vehicle.

“Bath police responded to this south end area on Tuesday evening at approximately 9:30 p.m. for similar reports,” Field wrote. “No one was located, but police believe they are related incidents. Further charges are possible.”

Freeman is scheduled to appear in Bath Superior Court on July 10.
