GRAY – In just two years the annual Patriot 5K Race in Gray has quickly become one of Maine’s premier races for avid runners, weekend warriors and first timers. With over $7,000 in cash and prizes you can be assured that the top runners in the state will be going head to head. The race also features a free kids run and other fun activities making this an amazing family event.
Last year, new course records were set when Louie Luchini clocked–in at 14:38 in the men’s category and Sheri Piers of Falmouth crossed the line in an impressive 17:00 in women’s. Piers recently qualified for the 2012 Women’s Olympic Trials Marathon.
“To have runners of Sheri’s caliber at our race is truly exciting” said co-race director Tim Anketell. “And our goal is to make this not only a great community event but also bring in elite runners from around New England all for a great cause.”
The beneficiary of this event, the Patriot Parents PTO, is an organization whose purpose is to strengthen, enhance, and encourage the educational and social environment of the schools in Gray and New Gloucester. Patriot Parents President, Michael Smith could not be more excited,
“This one event will help raise nearly $20,000 for our schools enrichment programs,” said Michael Smith, president of Patriot Parents. “This comes at the same time that MSAD 15 is initiating a cutting-edge, standards-based learning system, and under consideration to become an international baccalaureate school.”
Participants can see the course and register at www.patriots5k.org. This year’s event will be capped at 750 runners and anyone registered by May 1 will receive a free event t-shirt and goodie bag. The entry fee will be $18 in advance and $20 on race day.
