Thumbs up to Truslow Adult Day Center Program Director Debra Thomas and intern Brittini Herring for creating shadow boxes containing the highlights and memories of their clientele. Herring has contacted families of participants, seeking momentos to put in the shadow boxes along with information about the clients.

Two of those clients were featured in an article last weekend, and both enjoyed the finished products ”“ and their families did also.

Thumbs down to the continued access to and use of a path crossing active rail lines in Biddeford. Last week, 40-year-old Sean Page, a Biddeford resident and local tattoo artist, was killed when he crossed the train tracks. More needs to be done to prevent people from accessing the popular shortcut and remind people that crossing the tracks is actually trespassing. A fence or some other kind of barrier should be installed to keep another tragedy like this from happening in the future, especially in an area where many families live and foot traffic is high.

Thumbs up to the Lyman Board of Selectmen for working toward resolving the controversy over the town’s mowing contract last week. Board members signed an amendment that will reduce the contract’s term from three years to one. On July 27, 2011, selectmen extended a contract with Paul Fecteau of Paul’s Lawn Care, which was set to expire this past March. The multi-year nature of the contract, and the fact that there is no record of a public vote on the extension, caused outcry among some residents, and when selectmen voted in early March to let the contract stand, some townspeople continued to object. Some wanted the lawn services sent out to bid, while others cited legal precedent showing that multi-year contracts must be sent to Town Meeting for approval. We’re pleased to see the board working to correct this error and follow state law, and we hope the selectmen will decide to send the contract to Town Meeting, if only to quell any further discontent in town.

Thumbs up to Jason Townsend, an emergency medical dispatcher in Sanford, for helping a Lebanon woman give birth recently. Townsend helped guide a family friend through the process and keep the family calm as the birth took place. Although the birth only took about three to five minutes, Townsend’s precise instructions and ease on the job surely helped comfort the woman and her friend to allow for the safe delivery of a baby girl.

Thumbs up to the Old Orchard Beach Town Council for approving funds for repairs at The Ballpark last week. Town Manager Mark Pearson told the council about $12,000 was needed for improvements to ready the park for the upcoming baseball season and to fix code violations. The work will include electrical and plumbing repairs, structural support improvements and landscaping services. The town has a New England Collegiate Baseball League team, The Raging Tide, readying for a summer of games at the park. If the town wants to continue hosting the team and other events, some investments must be made. Another thumbs up is in order for Councilor Sharri MacDonald for negotiating a lower cost for plumbing repairs and leading a collection for donations from community members to help defray costs.
