Cape Elizabeth 20

Lake Region 0

NAPLES – Just 36 seconds into the season, Cape Elizabeth’s Tom Bottomley set the tone for the season, firing a shot into the net past Lake Region goalkeeper Joe Turnbull. It would be the first of many goals for the Capers, as they beat up on the Lakers defense by a final score of 20-0 in the April 14 opener for the boys’ lacrosse season in Naples.

The goal opened up a steady stream of scoring for Cape in the first quarter, as the team scored nearly every couple minutes and went into the second quarter with a 7-0 lead. Cape’s Tim Lavalle had a hand in the next three goals, first with an assist and then two of his own.

“He basically runs all of our offense for us,” Cape coach Ben Raymond said, of Lavalle. “He’s a solid player all over the field and we rely on him heavily.”

In the first four minutes of the second quarter, the Capers continued to show their dominance, but this time they did it through passing. Cape controlled possession of the ball for the first four minutes, working around the circle before breaking in to net another score. This pattern continued again as they won the next face-off.

Thomas Feenstra scored five goals to lead the way for the Capers, while teammate Alex Bornick added three of his own into the back of the net.

The Lakers lacrosse team looks to rebound April 23 at 4 p.m. at home against Fryeburg.
