WESTBROOK – No one could ever accuse Westbrook High School senior Gabby Ledue of being a slacker.
This year, Ledue is the president of the senior class, as well as the president of the student body, a job that requires her to lead the school’s student council. As if that weren’t enough, Ledue is also a member of the school’s Interact Club, which is dedicated to community service
But wait, there’s more.
This year, Ledue also received a Challenge Coin, a special award for citizenship and service to the community from Westbrook Public Safety Director Mike Pardue for her role in stopping a fight at school.
And last week, Ledue learned that she has earned one more honor this year. The Maine Principals’ Association selected her as one of the winners of the 2012 Principal’s Award, which is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship.
Ledue, who was nominated for the award by Westbrook Principal Tom O’Malley, said that she was happy for the recognition.
“It’s really an honor,” she said. “I don’t really expect to be noted for anything. I try hard in my classes and I like helping people and doing what I can to help better the school and the community. I was really pleased that Mr. O’Malley chose me, because there were a (number) of other students who could have won this award.”
O’Malley said that he felt that Ledue was a very worthy recipient of the honor. “Throughout her years at Westbrook High, Gabby has distinguished herself in the classroom and as a leader in the school and the community,” O’Malley said. “She very much deserves this recognition.”
In addition to her leadership roles with the student council and the senior class, Ledue, who is leaning toward attending Stonehill College in Massachusetts, has organized events that have striven to help the community at large, not just the school.
“I helped put together a blood drive and ran that with the Red Cross,” she said, adding that she has also given back with the Interact Club. “We rake leaves, we ran a food drive and done things like that to help the community.”
Ledue’s Challenge Coin award came after she stepped in and stopped a fight between two freshman girls earlier this year. Once again, she wasn’t seeking attention when she did it, she just wanted to do the right thing.
“It didn’t really seem like a big deal when it (the fight) was happening, but people were watching and no one was doing anything and no teachers were around,” Ledue said. “So I just stepped in and pulled them apart and stopped it from escalating.”
Westbrook High School senior Gabby Ledue was recently named as the winner of the 2012 Maine Principals’ Association Principal’s Award, an honor that she was nominated for by Westbrook High School Principal Tom O’Malley, left.
