WESTBROOK – The Westbrook City Council will get a peek into a possible future for the city when it hears a report next week from the Comprehensive Plan Committee, which has been working for about two years to update the city’s existing plan, adopted in 2000.
The group has been taking charge of a task performed approximately once every 10 years. The state requires a municipality to update its plan in order to remain eligible for state grants and loan programs such as Community Development Block Grants.
The plan serves as a blueprint for future city land-use ordinances and zoning laws. In effect, the plan helps the city manage growth and development for the next decade.
Dave Haskell, the chairman of the committee, praised the group’s work in coming up with a new plan.
“The committee was a fantastic group of people,” he said.
He said that the group has looked at all aspects of the existing plan and will be suggesting ways to improve land use in the city and also some capital improvement.
One area of the city that is discussed in the plan is Prides Corner.
“Some people want to see that area remain in some aspects, a rural area,” Haskell said. “But at the same time, we realized that at some point in time along the corridor of Route 302, there’s going to be some development there.”
Haskell said that sewer improvements eventually coming from Windham will make the Route 302 corridor much more attractive for development. “That will open that particular corridor up for Westbrook,” he said.
The council meeting will be held in Room 114 of Westbrook High School beginning at 6 p.m on April 23.
The Planning Board will also discuss the matter at a 7 p.m. meeting on April 26.
