WESTBROOK – The Westbrook Planning Board has recommended some restrictions on the sale of fireworks in the city.
On Tuesday night, the board voted unanimously to recommend standards to the City Council that will limit the sale of consumer fireworks to the so-called Gateway Commercial District, which encompasses Main Street, from approximately Westbrook City Hall to the Portland border and to the Westbrook Arterial.
In addition to limiting where fireworks can be sold, the board also added a recommendation suggested by Vice Chairman Rene Daniel that stores could only sell fireworks from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. The board had originally discussed a closing time of 8 p.m., but supported Daniel’s suggestion for the earlier closing time.
The issue of fireworks stores will now be taken up by the City Council at a future meeting. No date has been set for that item to appear before the council. – Mike Higgins
