PORTLAND — A record-setting temperature of 83 degrees was recorded Tuesday at Portland International Jetport.

It broke the 80-degree record set for April 17 in 2002, said Tom Hawley, a meteorologist at the National Weather Center in Gray.

The heat and lack of rain recently have conspired to wilt and burn many spring gardens and lawns.

Only .16 inch of rain has fallen in the Portland area so far this month, which is 2.33 inches below normal, Hawley said.

The driest April on record was in 1999, with .28 inch of rain. The wettest April on record was in 1973, with 9.9 inches of rain.

Last year, 6.36 inches of rain fell in the Portland area in April.

The weather service is predicting rain this weekend.
