BRUNSWICK — Bowdoin College senior long jumper Chris Martin has been named the New England Small College Athletic Conference Men’s Field Performer of the Week.
In a field that included several Division I athletes, Martin took two first-place finishes at the University of New Hampshire’s Wildcat Invitational last weekend.
Martin posted a distance of 22- 01.75 to claim the long jump, then shattered the Polar Bears’ 20-year old program mark in the triple jump with a performance of 47- 0850.
Martin’s distance broke the school mark of 47-03.25 formerly held by Jeff Maowho, who incidentally officiates the triple jump at Bowdoin home meets. Also a football player at Bowdoin, Martin was the NESCAC high jump champion as a freshman.
“Chris has been working hard to make some great jumps this spring,” said head coach Peter Slovenski. “He’s healthy and strong, and he’s running better on the runway. His technique is improving each week, so hopefully he can stretch his school record even farther during the championship season.”
The Bowdoin track teams will return to action this weekend with the women hosting the annual Aloha Relays this Friday and Saturday, while the men look to win their first outdoor state crown since 2009 when they compete at the Maine State Championship at Colby on Saturday.
