BIDDEFORD – A person was hit and killed by an Amtrak Downeaster train in Biddeford Monday afternoon.

The accident happened around 3 p.m. on a section of track about 400 feet west of Main Street in Biddeford, said Cynthia Scarano of Pan Am Railways, the owner of the tracks.

Scarano said the person was technically trespassing on the tracks.
According to the Amtrak website, the southbound train, Amtrak 686, normally leaves Portland at 2:35 p.m.

Amtrak, Pan Am and Biddeford police are all at the scene. No information about the person – including age or name – was immediately available.

Officials said the returning train from Boston will encounter significant delays because of the accident. That train is expected to be crowded because of Patriots Day activities in Boston today, including the Boston Marathon and a Red Sox day game.
