BOWDOINHAM — The Board of Selectmen last week awarded the contract for design of a municipal skate park to a Kennebunkport firm.
The skate park, to be built near Mailly Waterfront Park, will be dedicated to Bowdoinham resident Matthew Parker, who died in 2004 at age 15. Parker was a skate board enthusiast.
Selectmen awarded a $6,000 skate park design contract to WhoSkates of Kennebunkport. The firm submitted the lowest bid, Town Manager William Post said.
The design is expected to be done by mid-June, and construction depends on fundraising. At present, a reserve account for construction of the skate park contains $25,000.
In other business conducted during a meeting Tuesday, selectmen accepted a $127,466 bid from Topsham contractor Harry C. Crooker and Sons, the low-bidder, to reconstruct a portion of Ridge Road.
Post said the project will encompass a section of Ridge Road from Route 24 to Cemetery Road. The construction will begin April 23 and, depending on weather, should be done within three weeks.
The work will involve removing pavement, replacing the underground drainage system, installing of a new sub-base and base, and laying down the base pavement, Post said. Then Off Road Construction will do the sidewalk along this section of road. When that work is done, Crooker will return to do the final paving.
On Tuesday, the Board of Selectmen approved additional funding for the town’s 250th anniversary celebration, including $5,000 to go toward the skate park construction and $3,000 to the Merrymeeting Arts Center for the “Three Town Artists” display featuring the works of Carter Smith, Bryce Muir and Carlo Pittore.
Other 250th anniversary events include the library plant sale and farmers market opening on May 19; the Red, White and Blue Festival on June 23; an expanded three-day Celebrate Bowdoinham festival from Sept. 14 to Sept. 16; an Oct. 3 harvest festival; and a Dec. 1 holiday festival.

Selectmen allocated an additional $ 3,000 for the town’s veterans memorial park at the corner of Route 24 and Route 125. This project involves removing the foundation beneath the cannon and replacing it with a new concrete foundation and granite slab base. A plaque will be replaced, historic signs installed, shrubs and flowers planted and the flag pole will be lighted. The Veteran’s Memorial Park will be re-dedicated on Veterans Day.
Post said the selectmen on Tuesday received a packet of information regarding how municipal codes are enforced in town, to be discussed at a future meeting. He also updated the board on the budget process. The budget will presented to selectmen April 24. A public budget hearing is scheduled for May 8. The annual town meeting is scheduled for June 13.
