BIDDEFORD – Hannah Tavella had four goals and two assists Wednesday as the University of New England beat Gordon 15-11 for its school-record eighth straight win in women’s lacrosse.

Hannah Warren scored twice and Jenna Barton once in a span of less than eight minutes to give the Nor’easters (10-2, 4-0 Commonwealth Coast) a 13-10 lead with 8:30 remaining.

Warren finished with three goals as did Cara Cole against the Fighting Scots (8-3, 2-2)

MEN’S LACROSSE

ST. JOSEPH’S 9, EMMANUEL 4: Andrew Hamill scored three goals to help the Monks (7-7, 5-1 GNAC) defeat the Saints (6-6, 2-4) at Standish.

COLBY 20, USM 5: John Jennings had four goals to lead 13 scorers for the Mules (6-3) against the Huskies (3-7) at Gorham.

 

BOWDOIN 16, CLARK 3: Billy Bergner had three goals and two assists for the Polar Bears (8-3), who got goals from 10 players to beat the Cougars (5-5) at Brunswick.

Lawton Salley also scored three times for Bowdoin. Conor O’Toole and Brendan Hughes added two goals apiece.

 

UNE 9, GORDON 8: Dan O’Gorman scored with five seconds left in the second overtime period to lift the Nor’easters (8-6, 3-2 Commonwealth Coast) over the Fighting Scots (5-6, 3-3) at Biddeford.

SOFTBALL

BOWDOIN SWEEPS USM: The Polar Bears (17-8) used a 12-run first inning to take a 14-6 win over the Huskies (1-19) in the opener, then got a three-hitter from Melissa DellaTorre to win the second game 4-0 at Brunswick.

DellaTorre struck out nine and walked four. Adriane Krul had two hits and scored two runs in the late game.

In the opener, Amy Hackett led the Bowdoin offense with a home run and five RBI.

 

COLBY 3, THOMAS 2: Carolyn Bennett singled home Lindsay Peterson in the top of the eighth inning to put the Mules (7-13) on top of the host Terriers (8-17-1) at Waterville.

HUSSON SWEEPS NOR’EASTERS: Victoria Overlook had three hits, four RBI and three runs scored, and Courtney Hill five hits and a run scored, to lead the Eagles (17-7) to a doubleheader sweep of the University of New England (14-8) in Bangor, 7-5 and 8-4.

BASEBALL

USM 8, COLBY 5: David Ricker hit a two-out, three-run homer in the top of the 10th inning to lift the Huskies (12-11) over the Mules (9-11) at Waterville.

Ricker finished with two hits and two runs scored, and Brett Barrett went 3 for 4 with a run and an RBI for Southern Maine.

MEN’S HOCKEY

UMAINE: Forward Joey Diamond, and defensemen Mike Cornell and Mark Nemec were named captains of the 2012-13 team.

According to Coach Tim Whitehead, the selections were based on a vote of the players.
