POWNAL — Firefighters extinguished a brush fire that damaged two old camper-trailers Sunday afternoon on Randall Lane.
The fire was reported at 3:34 p.m. Sunday at 408 Randall Lane, according the to Freeport dispatch log.
Pownal Fire Chief Jesse Peters said firefighters found a brush fire that burned out of control and extended to two old abandoned campers on the property.
The Pownal Fire Department responded, then requested assistance from the Freeport Fire Department. Yarmouth and North Yarmouth fire crews provided station coverage.
Peters estimated it took firefighters about 30 minutes to control the blaze. They remained on scene “mopping up,” for another hour or so. It then took crews another 30 minutes to repack hoses and get the equipment back in order.
The ground is very dry this time of year, Peters said, and there was enough wind Sunday to spread the flames. Firefighters used the compressed air foam system on the engine truck to attack and extinguish the blaze.
Peters estimated the brush fire burned approximately a 50-foot-by-50-foot area, possibly larger. One camper was destroyed and the other heavily damaged, but neither was estimated to have much value.
