GLENDALE, Ariz. — Mike Smith had 44 saves in his second straight shutout and Ray Whitney passed 1,000 career points with a goal and assist in the Phoenix Coyotes’ 4-0 rout of the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday night.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Antoine Vermette and Radim Vrbata also scored for the Coyotes, who are tied with Pacific Division-leading Los Angeles in points with 91, but the Kings own the tiebreaker.

Three of Phoenix’s goals came on power plays, all in the second period, for a team that ranks last in the NHL in that category.

Whitney’s assist on Vrbata’s goal made him the 79th player in NHL history to reach 1,000 points. Forty seconds later, Whitney scored his 24th goal of the season.

CAPITALS 3, CANADIENS 2: Washington welcomed back Nicklas Backstrom and took a big step toward the playoffs, blowing a two-goal lead for the second game in a row before taking the shootout over visiting Montreal.

It was Backstrom’s first game since suffering a concussion Jan. 4.

The result, coupled with Toronto’s 4-3 win over Buffalo, moved the Capitals two points clear of the Sabres with three games to play. Washington also moved within two points of Southeast Division leader Florida.

Alex Ovechkin and Alexander Semin scored in the shootout for the Capitals. David Desharnais had his attempt stopped by goaltender Michal Neuvirth, and Max Pacioretty missed wide for the Canadiens.

 

BLUE JACKETS 5, BLUES 2: R.J. Umberger scored twice, rookie goalie Allen York made it three wins in three career starts and Columbus won at St. Louis.

 

WILD 4, KINGS 3: Erik Christensen and Mikko Koivu scored in a shootout to give Minnesota a win at home.

BLACKHAWKS 5, PREDATORS 4: Brent Seabrook scored at 8:19 of the third period, and Chicago clinched a playoff berth with a win at Nashville, Tenn.

 

DEVILS 5, HURRICANES 0: Ilya Kovalchuk had a goal and two assists, Martin Brodeur made 22 saves in his third shutout of the season and New Jersey clinched a playoff berth by routing host Carolina.

 

LIGHTNING 3, JETS 2: Steven Stamkos scored his NHL-leading 56th goal of the season 45 seconds into overtime to give Tampa Bay a win at home.

Stamkos picked up his NHL-record fifth OT goal in one season, scoring from the left circle.

Ryan Malone scored twice, giving him five goals in the past two games for the Lightning.

Goalie Sebastien Caron made his second appearance since signing with Tampa Bay on March 19 and his first NHL start since Nov. 10, 2006.

Antti Miettinen and Kyle Wellwood scored for Winnipeg.

MAPLE LEAFS 4, SABRES 3: Joey Crabb had a goal and an assist, Ben Scrivens made 29 saves and Toronto ended a team-record 11-game home losing streak.

Phil Kessel, John-Michael Liles and Matt Frattin also scored, and Clarke MacArthur added two assists.

Tyler Ennis, Ville Leino and Drew Stafford scored for Buffalo.

SENATORS 4, FLYERS 3: Jason Spezza and Milan Michalek scored shootout goals to help Ottawa win at Philadelphia.

The Senators blew a 3-0 lead before Michalek and Spezza bailed them out in the shootout. Matt Read scored in the shootout for the Flyers.

Spezza, Daniel Alfredsson and Chris Neil scored first-period goals for the Senators.
