To the editor:
I was on the committee for designing and building the current Woolwich Town Office. There was only one person who did tax collection, town clerk business and registered motor vehicles.
Don’t tell me there are more people now, because we old people are dying off. We had just as many positions to fill as now.
That one person had three children and wrote checks by hand on one counter, not two desks — with no computer.
Taking out a “government” loan to pay for the building means that taxpayers are just paying for it a different way. The government is us.
If you are on the last payment of anything, why can’t you give it a rest?
I am retired and on a fixed income. My pay scale doesn’t go up. Gas, food and taxes are all going up.
What happens to us retired people? We are sitting ducks. I am getting tired.
Sylvia Carlton,
Woolwich

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
