THE MATHCOUNTS team from the Center for Teaching and Learning in Edgecomb placed second in a regional competition held at Kennebec Valley Community College in Fairfield on Feb. 11. The team — from left, Avery Genus, Samantha Her ter, Abe Steinberger, Brian McGrath, teacher Katherine Rittershaus and coach Rick McGrath — will continue to the state meet on Saturday. A second group of students was allowed to participate with the official team. They placed first among the unofficial groups. These students were Xander Bartone, Morganne Elkins, Teagan Guenther, Eloise Kelly and Nicholas Miaoulis. Mathcounts is a national organization that coordinates an extracurricular math program for middle school students, culminating in a competition each spring. This is the seventh time CTL students have placed first, second or third in the Mathcounts regionals.
