To the editor:
I write in response to a Bruce Gagnon’s letter titled “Police state practice,” which was published March 14. I would like to express a different opinion.
First, I would like to publicly say that I have a high regard for Morse High School Principal Peter Kahl. I know that he has nothing but high regard for all his students and would never infringe on their personal rights or civil liberties unless there was a strong and compelling reason to do so.
I also will state that I have grandchildren enrolled at Morse, and I welcome any method that will protect them and their safety. I do not want illegal drugs being circulated or stored in that building.
If you read recent articles in The Times Record, you are award that there are young people dying in our community due to illegal use of drugs. None of us should have our heads buried in the sand. I see this recent search as an example of being proactive.
I also want the students to have practice on what to do when they hear the words, “This is a lockdown.” All of us react better when we know what to do. Even though we are a small town, the unexpected can happen here.
I fully support the action that was taken by Mr. Kahl and the superintendent of schools for Regional School Unit 1.
Christina Hagan,
Bath

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
