CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — University of Maine men’s ice hockey senior standout Spencer Abbott was named the 2012 Athletic Republic Hockey East Player of the Year on Thursday night at an awards banquet held at the Royal Sonesta Hotel.
In addition, Abbott was also named one of the 10 finalists for the 2012 Hobey Baker Award, given to the nation’s top college hockey player.
Abbott, along with teammate Brian Flynn , earned a spot on the Hockey East First Team. Linemate Joey Diamond was selected to the Hockey East Second Team.
The Hobey Baker announcement marked the third consecutive season that a Black Bear was among the top 10 in consideration for college hockey’s top honor. Former Black Bear and current Detroit Red Wing player Gustav Nyquist was a finalist the past two seasons.
There is an additional round of fan voting, with the three finalist named on March 29. The winner will be named on April 6 at the Frozen Four in Tampa, Fla.
Abbott, Flynn and Diamond finished as the top three scorers in Hockey East.
Abbott was the lone unanimous selection for the Hockey East First Team. He leads the nation with 59 points ( 20 goals, 39 assists).
