BAGHDAD ( AP) — Iraqi officials say assailants have killed a Shiite mother and her three children after breaking into their house in Baghdad.
Police say the attackers burst into the family’s home early today in the Zafaraniyah neighborhood in southeastern Baghdad before slitting the throats of the mother and children. The father was not in the house during the attack.
They say the family had returned to their home in the Sunni-majority area of the neighborhood 10 months ago after fleeing the worst of the sectarian fighting that gripped Iraq in 2006 and 2007.
Morgue officials confirmed the deaths.
All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.
