VOLUNTEER CAROLYN HALL reads to children in Catherine Buotte’s first grade classroom at Dike-Newell School in Bath on Feb. 26. Hall joined 264 other volunteers reading with approximately 4,000 children during the United Way’s Community Read Aloud event on March 2. “It’s a wonderful way for adults to connect with children and share a love of books and reading,” Hall said. A total of 265 volunteers read to students in 20 local elementary schools and 28 other locations, including child care programs and preschools, as part of the United Way of Mid Coast Maine’s Community Read Aloud event in March. The event takes place every year on March 2 — the anniversary of children’s author Dr. Seuss’ birthday — as part of Read Across America Day. The event, organized by the United Way’s Success By 6 program, was co-sponsored by Comcast and the Topsham Expresso Rotary Club.
