AUGUSTA (AP) — Maine Democrats are criticizing Gov. Paul LePage for taking a weeklong trip to Jamaica while the legislative session is in its final weeks.
Democrats say the governor leaves today for vacation — his second trip to Jamaica during a legislative session. This time, he leaves with just a few weeks left in the session while budgets, major Health and Human Services Department changes and public education, tax and energy issues are still unsettled.
Democrats said LePage’s vacations show he’s out of touch with the needs of regular people. Party chair Ben Grant says the governor’s leaving as the heat gets turned up.
LePage spokeswoman Adrienne Bennett said the vacation is an annual trip for the governor’s family and that he’ll be in regular contact and available as needed.
