FREEPORT — Workers at the Reebok outlet avoided catastrophe Friday, noticing the scent of a small electrical fire in one wall of the building before it got out of hand.

“They were very lucky,” Freeport Deputy Fire Chief Paul Conley said today. “ If that had gone on and they didn’t get a whiff of something or if it had happened overnight, we probably would have had a total loss.”

Total damage was minimal — an estimated $150 — for the call that came in around 3:30 p.m. Friday.

Conley said the fire originated from the inappropriate use of an extension cord that overloaded one of the building’s circuits.

At the time, Conley said, one Freeport engine was in Durham for a house fire. One Freeport engine and one Yarmouth engine responded to the Reebok store.
