Irish center coordinates Saturday festivities
PORTLAND — The Maine Irish Heritage Center (MIHC) will host the West End’s annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration Saturday, beginning with a procession and flag raising in honor of the late Eddie Murphy.
Murphy was a local community activist who was referred to by many as the “Giant Leprechaun,” according to an MICH release. “He was instrumental in developing this traditional ceremony.”
Led by a color guard and members of the Claddagh Mor Band, the procession will depart at 8 a.m. from the steps of the Maine Irish Heritage Center, at the corner of State and Gray streets.
From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., the center will be open for tours, serving tea and soda bread. Local musician Joe Markley will play traditional Irish tunes during the Saturday farmers market.
At 10: 30 a. m. the Irish American Club will lead this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade along Commercial Street. The parade will begin at the Portland Fish Pier and march to the Maine State Pier.
Saturday sale supports Skidompha
DAMARISCOTTA — For St. Patrick’s Day, any book with green or orange on its cover will be on sale at half price at the Skidompha Secondhand Book Shop in Damariscotta on Saturday.
“ That’s a lot of books,” Rosie Bensen, co-manager of the shop, said in a release announcing the sale. “If you stand inside the door and look around, you’ll see green and orange everywhere. For example, practically every gardening book has green on its cover. And this the best time of year to buy gardening books.”
The shop, operated entirely by volunteers, will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Proceeds from sales benefit Skidompha Public Library.
The shop is located in the Red Barn, 115 Elm St. Donations are accepted whenever the shop is open.
