SEBAGO – Childhood friends Wendy Brown Newcomb and Holly Berry Moiles know a little something about art.
Newcomb, a Sebago resident and painter, has had her works on display around the state including at L.L. Bean, while Moiles, an illustrator from Waldoboro, has been published in a variety of children’s books.
Now, after more than 30 years of being friends and artists, the women have decided to bring their passion to the people by starting BrownBerry Studio Workshops.
“We just started the workshops in January,” said Newcomb. “Holly and I love to get together and break loose and just do fun art projects. We have a great time doing it, and it brings us so much joy, so we thought why not share it with others?”
Moiles agreed.
“The thread of our friendship has been sort of based on art,” said Moiles. “Discovering new, creative ways to use art. It has brought us joy and we wanted to share that with fun workshops.”
BrownBerry Studio Workshops isn’t a typical art studio; in fact it’s not a studio at all.
“We are mobile,” said Newcomb. “We want to bring art and fun to people all around the state not just in one place. If there is a want or desire for us to be there, we will set up a workshop in that area.”
Ultimately, the women hope to turn their workshops into parties.
“We would love to do art parties,” said Newcomb. “Much like Tupperware or jewelry parties. We would bring the supplies to people’s homes and they could provide snacks and space and just create.”
Newcomb and Moiles also hopes to do bridal and birthday parties.
“How great would it be to have a bridal art party?” said Newcomb. “The group could create individual pieces of paper to go into a scrapbook for the bride or help make favors for the wedding. That would be wonderful.”
The workshop classes depend on what the client wants or the area’s demands, but so far their most popular classes seem to be paper-making followed by book-making.
“We actually make the paper in the Saturday workshop,” said Newcomb. “Then create books with the paper that was made at the next workshop.”
The workshops are usually held Saturday and Sunday but can also be held in two consecutive weekends if that works better for the registrants.
So far the team has booked classes in Sebago, Waldoboro and Kennebunk.
The Studio’s next stop is at Sebago Town Hall on March 17 and 18. Saturday’s workshop is decorative paper-making followed by Sunday’s bookmaking class. The cost is $45 for each day.
“People don’t need to sign up for both classes,” said Newcomb. “They can do either or.”
The classes run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., drinks are provided, but participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch. Space is limited to about 20 people per class so pre-registration is encouraged.
“The best part about these classes is that you don’t have to be an artist,” said Newcomb. “You just have to want to be creative and have fun.”
Moiles concurred.
“It really isn’t about furthering yourself artistically, but being creative and social with other people,” said Moiles. “It’s really about the experience.”
