Remembering the Civil War

On Saturday, March 17, two sisters will present a program about their great-great-grandfathers’ experiences during the Civil War, at 9 a.m. at Windham Public Library. This will be a lively event with music of the time, artifacts, diaries and letters to pursue. There’s no charge for the program which is hosted by Windham Historical Society, but donations are always welcome to be used in building the new Living History Center on the grounds of the Society in Windham Center.

Clothing sale

At North Windham Union Church Thrift Shop, there’s a bag sale going on from March 17 through the end of March. All clothes and linens plus most articles are $1 or under – or save by buying a bag full for $5! The thrift shop is in the basement of the church on Route 302, near the corner of Route 115 and is open from 1-3 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday or 10 until noon Saturdays.

Scholarship benefit dinner

On Saturday, March 17, Field Allen American Legion Post will hold a scholarship fund raiser, corned beef and cabbage dinner, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Windham Veteran’s Center. Cost per person will be $10 or $25 for a family. Proceeds will be used for local high school scholarships.

Speakout

On Thursday, March 22, Bill Diamond will host Speakout on Windham’s local Channel 7, at 7 p.m. This month the program features a one-on-one discussion with Town Councilor Dennis Welch and the second segment of the show will be devoted to Diamond’s discussion on “hot” legislative issues. Viewers are welcome to call in questions during the show at 892-0546 or come to the Council Chambers at town hall and be part of the audience.

Bean supper

A baked bean supper will be held at Cornerstone Assembly of God on Cottage Road on Saturday, March 17, from 5-6:30 p.m. The menu includes a variety of beans, casseroles, salads, breads, rolls and homemade desserts. Adults $6, children (6-12) $3. and under age 6, free. For more information, call 892-5980.

Help needed

Full and part-time volunteer drivers are needed to deliver Meals on Wheels in the Windham, Gorham, Standish and Gray communities. Call Virginia Billings at 892-3891 between 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Mileage is paid at .44 per mile. Background check is required.

VFW meeting change

VFW Post 10643 did not meet on March 14. Instead, there will be a very special meeting to install the new Post commander and officers on Sunday, March 25, at 1 p.m. at Gilbert’s Chowder House, Windham.

Community Cafe?

Over 60? Meet some new friends and join in the fun at the Windham Community Cafe? on the second Thursday of every month. The hearty lunch is catered by Al’s Catering and on April 12 will be a roast beef dinner. Suggested donation is $5. The Cafe? is located at Unity Garden, 124 Tandberg Trail. Kindergarten registration

All children who will be 5 years old by Oct. 15 are eligible to start school in September. Kindergarten screening and brief parent presentation will be held in April. Starting Monday, March 19, on-line kindergarten registration will be available at www.windham.k12.me.us/wsd ps/kindergarten.registration/index.cfm. You may complete the form online and schedule an appointment for April 23 or 24. If you are unable to complete the online registration or have questions, call 892-1840, option 5, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Senior Center activities

Lakes Region Senior Center, at 40 Acorn Street, Gorham, is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Stop in, become a member and join others for daily activities including cribbage, card and board games, needlework, exercise, scrapbooking and on Thursday, March 22, the public is invited to play Bingo at 10 a.m. 25 cents per card, first card free.

Corned beef & cabbage

The first public supper of the season at Windham Hill United Church of Christ will be held Saturday, March 24, from 5-6:30 p.m. The menu includes corned beef, cabbage, turnip, carrots, mashed potato and soda bread. Dessert is make-your-own ice cream Sunday. $8 for adults, $5 for children under 12. Come early and don’t miss out on this popular supper!

Windham Community Garden taking apps

Windham Community Garden applications are being taken, through March 31, for a 10×20-foot garden bed. Located on Route 202 next to the Public Safety building, if you are interested, call Marge at 892-7192 or visit the website, www.windhamcommunitygarden.org.

Free clothes

Windham’s Free Clothes Closet is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday. A great selection of clothing for all ages including adults is available including hats, jackets and coats, shoes and women’s handbags; other items include books for all ages, some games and linens. Cinderella at Windham Center Stage

“Cinderella,” a musical presented by Windham Center Stage Theater, 8 School Road, Windham features 75 local children. Showtime runs through March 25. 7 p. m. Fridays, 2 and 7 p.m. Saturdays, 2 p.m. Sundays. All seats reserved. Tickets range from $5 to $10. Call 893-2098.

Baked beans

A baked bean supper will be held Saturday, March 31, from 4:30-6 p.m. at Tuttle Road United Methodist Church, Cumberland. On the menu, three varieties of beans, hot dogs, American chop suey, coleslaw, homemade pies and biscuits and beverages. $8 adults, $5 children. Takeout available. Handicapped accessible.

Free tax help

AARP provides free tax help to older citizens and those with low incomes. In Windham, these sessions are held at Unity Gardens, 124 Tandberg Trail on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 2-7 p.m. Appointments are required. Call 894-5110.

Learn how to cope

On Thursdays, through April 12, workshops will be held at Windham High School to help participants learn how to cope with health challenges such as tiredness, pain, stress and feeling “down.” Living Well for Better Health workshops, proven to work for people with arthritis, chronic pain, diabetes and other lifelong health problems include topics such as managing pain and fatigue, eating well, ways to get active and tips on talking with your doctor and family. Veterans help available

Veterans Service Officer Phyllis D’Orsay will be at the Windham Veterans Center on Wednesday morning, March 28, to assist veterans, widows of veterans and dependents with questions about benefits and other information. If you have questions of a military nature, stop in and get some answers. The Veterans Center is off Route 302, on Memorial Drive, to the back of Hannaford and right of Lowe’s. No appointment is needed.

Every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Owen O’Donnell, Benefit Specialist from SMAA will be at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church to provide information and assistance on a variety of benefits including fuel assistance, food stamps, tax and rent rebate and more. Call 396-6500 to make an appointment.

Pancakes for Technology

Manchester School is holding a pancake breakfast at Applebee’s on Saturday, March 31, from 8-9:30 a.m. Tickets are $5 each. Proceeds will be used to purchase more technology for Manchester School. Apply by April 1 at Windham Assessor’s Office (894-5960, ext. 3) for partial property tax exemptions for veterans, veterans estates held by widows, widowers, parents or minor children; homestead exemption or the exemption for those who are legally blind.
