To the editor:
The purpose of my letter is call to attention the third place finish and superior performance of the Brunswick High Jazz Ensemble achieved during the Berklee High School Jazz Festival at Hynes Convention Center in Boston on March 10.
The Berklee College of Music in Boston, one of the premier music institutions in the nation, has hosted this jazz music event since 1969. Our Brunswick High School Music students placed third in their division from a field of 16 bands from around the country and did so with style and grace.
The depth and breadth of what our music students accomplished this weekend could only be compared to the equivalent of having our Brunswick High School football team play the high school football champions from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and win the game by three touchdowns. Our students not only distinguished themselves with an excellent performance, but they also represented the town with distinction.
Recently, I attended the Brunswick School Board’s public comment session and heard many of my fellow citizens tell the board why they moved to Brunswick.
They said they heard about the quality of our schools. Our students’ superior performance coupled with their conduct and composure under pressure validated the comments of my fellow citizens at the School Board meeting.
Brunswick High School music students represent the best of our town has to offer. Many are honor roll students, but all share the common experience of learning how to achieve excellence through the disciplined study of music.
Music enables them to think creatively to solved problems, perform as a member of a team and set goals while progressively and sequentially working to achieve them.
Many thanks also to Michael Scarpone, Brunswick High School’s director of bands. Mr. Scarpone’s dedication and selflessness in teaching and leading our students is nothing short of sensational. He consistently challenges them to stretch themselves, and his efforts were also evident on March 10.
Again a heartfelt congratulations to Brunswick High School Band’s Jazz Ensemble and a hearty thank you to the director of bands, Michael Scarpone.
