Free tax preparation
Certified IRS volunteer tax preparers are available to help citizens of Westbrook and surrounding communities with the preparation of both federal and state of Maine income tax returns.
Volunteers will be at the Westbrook Community Center on Bridge Street 9 a.m.- 1p.m. every Saturday through Saturday, April 14,. And, since all returns are filed electronically, refunds can be received in a little as eight days. This service is totally free and available to taxpayers of all ages.
If time permits, walk-ins will be taken. It is better, however, to make an appointment by calling 329-6911.
One-act win
The cast and crew from Westbrook High School were among the winners last weekend at the Maine Drama Festival’s 2012 one-act play regional competition.
As part of the competition, regional events took place in eight high schools across the state. Two schools from each site moved on to the state championships, set for March 23-24, with Westbrook and Catherine McAuley taking honors at the competition held at Marshwood High School Saturday.
Westbrook performed “Killing Bill,” taking home numerous judge’s commendations, including: ensemble acting, outstanding vocal performance, state combat, lighting design, and overall technical excellence.
Wright, Edwards engaged
Mr. and Mrs. Peter Wright of Dover-Foxcroft are happy to announce the engagement of their daughter, Whitney Joyce Wright, to Ryan Patrick Edwards of Westbrook.
He is the son of Barbara Guevin and Armand Edwards, both of Westbrook.
Whitney is a senior at the University of Southern Maine, majoring in business management. She will graduate in May and she works at Bank of America in Portland.
Ryan is an electrician at Mancini Electric in Portland.
The couple is planning a wedding on Saturday, Aug. 4.
Book sale continues
The members of Friends of Walker Memorial Library are raising funds to buy more reading materials for the library. A book is going on this week at the library during library hours, Thursday, March 15, Friday, March 16, and Saturday, March 17.
The library has boxes and boxes of books to share. The collection of used books is mostly adult fiction with a sprinkling of other items. The majority of books are ex-library editions, but other materials are mixed in, as well.
On Friday, all material will be half price. On Saturday, it will be a bag for $3.
All proceeds go to Walker Memorial Library to assist with the purchase of new materials for the library.

Seniors to dine
Westbrook Senior Citizens will be served a ham dinner at 12 p.m. on Monday, March 19, in the Westbrook Community Center on Bridge Street.
The menu includes ham, raisin sauce, potato, vegetable and apple pie.
Al Hawkes will entertain.
The seniors will travel to Worcester, Mass., on Sunday, March 25, for a Celtic dinner show.
The group will see a Flag Day dinner show on Thursday, June 14, in Rhode Island On Tuesday, July 3, they will see the tall ships in Boston.

Woman’s club art show
The annual Woman’s Club student art show will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 20, in West-Warren Congregational Church, 810 Main St.
Light refreshments will be served.
Bins, barrels for sale
The annual Westbrook compost bin and rain barrel sale has begun. Compost bins are available for $45 and rain barrels for $58.50.

Red Cross blood drive
The American Red Cross is sponsoring a blood drive 10 a.m. -4 p.m. on Friday, March 30, at Cinemagic, 183 County Road, Westbrook.
Coyne named to United Way post
Dan Coyne of Westbrook was recently hired at the United Way of Greater Portland as director of public policy.
Previously, Coyne was the legislative director of the Maine Center for Economic Policy. He serves on the boards of the Maine Irish Heritage Center and Great Schools Partnerships.
