PORTLAND (AP) — Maine U.S. Senate candidate and former governor Angus King is finding that political campaigns these days are a lot different from the last time he ran for office in 1998 thanks to social media.
Someone has already set up a fake Twitter account using the handle King Angus.
The anonymous holder of the account mocks King as self-absorbed, self-important and sometimes out of touch.
King, running as an independent, calls the tweeter “a bozo” but says he can’t be bothered by it.
His campaign communications director tells The Portland Press Herald that King will focus on the issues important to Maine and the fake Twitter account is just a part of today’s negative political tone.
King’s official website, Facebook page and Twitter account are scheduled to be up soon.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
