The Hampden Academy boys’ basketball team and the Wells’ girls’ team were honored as Teams of the Year on Saturday at halftime of the McDonald’s Senior All-Star basketball games.
The schools also received $1,000.
Representatives from the Maine Red Claws, Maine McDonald’s and the Maine Association of Basketball Coaches (MABC) made the announcement.
Thirteen nominations were submitted to the selection committee. The two teams were selected based on the stated criteria of having made “an exceptional impact on Maine High School Basketball and in the lives of others.”
Presque Isle High’s Stacia Caron and Windham’s James Blanchard were honored with the fourth annual Maine McDonald’s Spirit of the Game award at the Maine Association of Basketball Coaches Awards banquet on March 9 at Husson University. In addition, each received a $500 Spirit Scholarship.
Caron has served as the manager of the girls’ varsity basketball team for four years and the girls’ soccer team for three years.
Blanchard has overcome the challenges of autism and has been a member of the Windham basketball program for four years. He has had the opportunity to play in several games, often times in the last minute of the game.
Meryl Bond of Erskine Academy hit 48 of 50 shots to the Maine Foul Shooting competition for girls on Saturday. The other three contestants — Carmen Bragg of Washburn, Angleana Lyons of Machias and Olivia Dimick of Freeport — were 44 for 50.
Chase Vicaire of Mattanawcook Academy won the boys’ contest, going 50 for 50. Colton Bivinghouse of Katahdin was in second with 47 of 50. Nicholas Clark of Greely hit 43 of 50, and Dylan Price of Madison made 41 of 50.
Kelly Beisswanger of Wells High and John Passarelli of Scarborough High received a $2,000 scholarship award at the Maine Association of Basketball Coaches Awards Banquet at Husson University on Friday.
