LEWISTON — There was no drama. No overtime. No tip-in.
This time, the Thornton Academy boys hockey team dominated, in every way a team can dominate, beating St. Dominic 5-1 for the Maine Class A boys hockey championship on Saturday night at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.
The Trojans ended the season with a 20-1-1 record.
“Words can’t describe it,” Thornton Academy goalie Joe Ferrante said. “It’s such a surreal moment. It’s hard to take in at once, but it’s just great.”
It’s the second consecutive title for the Golden Trojans, as well as the second state hockey title in school history. Thornton defeated Lewiston 4-3 in double-overtime last season, winning the contest on a tip-in by forward C.J. Maksut.
Maksut delivered again on Saturday night, netting a hat trick, along with an assist. He leaves Thornton as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 154 points in his career. Fellow senior forward Andrew Carignan had a goal and two assists in the contest.
“Your best players, when the lights come on, they shine the brightest,” Thornton Academy head coach Jamie Gagnon said. “(Maksut’s) had an incredible career, I can’t say enough good things about him, what he’s brought to us from a leadership standpoint from the locker room and on the ice.”
St. Dom’s head coach Steve Ouellette made the decision before the game to start goalie Austin Christopher ahead of Grant Carrier. Both had split time during the season, but Carrier got the shutout in the Saints’ 1-0 win over Lewiston in the Eastern Class A final last week.
“They both had pretty much similar stats all season, similar wins,” Ouellette said. “Both had big wins. It’s one of those things, whichever way I go, it’s going to be what it is. Both kids deserve (the start). Unfortunately, you can only pick one.”
While the shots were even in the first period (9-9), the Saints kept the pressure on in the Thornton zone. The Trojans, however, took advantage of their openings. Maksut led off the scoring for the Trojans just two minutes into the contest, rebounding a Carignan shot off the pads of Christopher and knocking the puck into the net for the 1-0 score.
Less than two minutes later, Thornton upped the lead to 2-0, with Carignan scoring a power-play goal off a pass in front of the net from Nick Chen. Maksut added one more goal midway through the period, on a breakaway, to give the Trojans a 3-0 lead. Greg Lodge was credited with an assist on the play.
“We knew we had to match (St. Dom’s) intensity, I don’t think we did a great job of that early,” Gagnon said. “They took it to us the first couple of shifts. We were just happy to get a couple (goals) there and stretch the game out a little bit.”
The Saints slowed down the Trojans somewhat in the second period, but Thornton scored an additional goal when Lodge took a Carignan pass and fired a slap shot past Christopher for the 4-0 lead.
The Saints ruined Ferrante’s shutout chance six minutes into the third period when forward Troy Haefele poked in a power-play goal past the TA goalie, cutting the score to 4-1. The Saints rarely had second-opportunity shots thanks to the play of the Thornton defensemen, who sent deflected shots away from their own zone throughout the contest.
“We’ve been saying all along, they’re probably the most underrated part of our team,” Carignan said. “We get so much production out of our offense every game. This is a good effort from our defense tonight, and it goes to show we’re just as good defensively as we are offensively.”
Maksut sealed the victory for the Trojans, scoring an empty net goal with 12 seconds remaining, sending the well-traveled Thornton crowd into a frenzy.
The shots remained fairly even throughout the contest, as Thornton finished with 28 shots to St. Dom’s 21 shots. Ferrante made 20 saves on the night, while Christopher had 23 saves.
It was the final game for 14 Trojan seniors, the most successful group in school history: Maksut, Carignan, Chen, Lodge, Ferrante, Bryan Dallaire, Matt Letellier, Bryce Lamontagne, Brett Levasseur, Brandon Veilleux, John Remmes, Rob Downing and Tyler Danley.
“It hasn’t sunk in yet,” Maksut said. “We’re happy for the 14 seniors and the rest of the team. It’s a great way to end it.”
