GRINNELL, Iowa – Bates College junior David Pless and Colby junior Dom Kone each won a second consecutive title with a record-setting performance Saturday at the NCAA Division III indoor track and field championships.

Pless, who finished fifth in the weight throw on Friday, took the shot put title with a heave of 60 feet, 6½ inches, breaking the Division III record by 9½ inches.

Kone, of Bucksport, set a school record in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.75 seconds.

Southern Maine junior Ben Manning was eighth in the 800-meter dash. Manning covered the distance in 1:57.41, 5.15 seconds behind winner Mike Hutton of St. Thomas (Minn.).

USM freshman Hannah Wiley placed 14th in the triple jump.

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS: Alex Jones finished 24th and April Dunleavy placed 25th in the slalom on the final day of competition at Bozeman, Mont., helping Bates finish 13th out of 21 schools.

Emily Hayes of Bates finished 30th in the women’s slalom.

Colby’s Jim Ryan was 25th in the men’s race. Cassady Roberts was 26th and Natalie Biedermann placed 32nd for the Colby women.

Vermont, with Freeport’s Lucy Garrec playing a leading role for the Nordic team, claimed the overall title with 832 points, well ahead of Utah (671) and Colorado (670).

BASEBALL

MAINE 6, BOWLING GREEN 1: Shaun Coughlin struck out seven and walked none in a six-hitter as the Black Bears (5-7) downed the Falcons (3-11) at Winter Haven, Fla.

Maine took a 4-0 lead in the fourth on an RBI double by Silva, and RBI singles by Tyler Patzalek, Alex Calbick and Sam Balzano.

USM 8, FARMINGDALE STATE 4: David Ricker went 4 for 5 with a double, a triple and three RBI for the Huskies (2-1), who used a five-run seventh to overcome a 3-1 deficit against the Rams (5-5) at Farmingdale, N.Y.

Forrest Chadwick added a two-run single and Anthony Pisani scored three runs for USM.

BATES SWEEPS WORCESTER STATE: Nate Pajka homered twice and drove in seven runs to lead the Bobcats (6-2) to a 15-4 win over the Lancers (0-4) in the first game of a doubleheader at Darien, Conn.

Mekae Hyde was 3 for 5 with a home run and two RBI, and Rockwell Jackson had two doubles and two RBI for Bates in the opener.

Mike Antonellis threw a three-hitter to lead the Bobcats to a 3-0 win in Game 2. Mike Ciummei hit an RBI single, and Kevin McGregor and Jeffrey Gunn drew bases-loaded walks in Bates’ three-run sixth.

SOFTBALL

CAL STATE BAKERSFIELD 12, MAINE 3: Emily Bliss went 3 for 3 with two home runs and five RBI to help the Roadrunners (6-12) down the Black Bears (4-15) in five innings at Northridge, Calif.

Hilary Kane drove in two runs for Maine.

MEN’S LACROSSE

BOWDOIN 7, CONNECTICUT COLLEGE 5: Patrick Lawlor broke a 4-4 tie with 6:15 left in the third quarter, and the Polar Bears held off the Camels in a NESCAC opener at New London, Conn.

Lawlor also scored in the second quarter. Griffin Cardew added a goal and two assists.

UNE 12, PLYMOUTH STATE 10: Dylan Thomas, Nick Gross and Mike Pennacchio scored in a five-minute span late in the game to give the Nor’easters (4-0) a 12-9 lead over the Panthers (0-1) at Biddeford.

Gross and Tyler Thomas each scored three goals for UNE, and Dylan Thomas had three assists.

MIDDLEBURY 7, BATES 1: Stew Kerr scored twice and Mike Giordano had three assists to help the Panthers (1-0) beat the Bobcats (1-2) in a NESCAC opener at Middlebury, Vt.

Thomas Repko scored for Bates.

AMHERST 9, COLBY 8: Evan Redwood scored his third goal of the game with 1:47 remaining to lift the Jeffs over the Mules in a NESCAC opener at Amherst, Mass.

Greg McKillop and Ian Deveau each scored twice for the Mules.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

USM 23, UMAINE-FARMINGTON 4: Lauren Santo had five goals and three assists to lead the Huskies (2-0) past the Beavers (0-1) at Gorham.

Jenna Cyr and Jess Gassman each had three goals and an assist for USM, which broke the school’s single-game scoring record.

Maddi Kadnar scored twice for Farmington.

BOWDOIN 11, CONNECTICUT COLLEGE 6: Carolyn Gorajek scored four goals, and Elizabeth Clegg had two goals and two assists to lead the Polar Bears to a win in their opener at Brunswick.

Katie Stewart added a pair of goals for Bowdoin.

MIDDLEBURY 12, BATES 7: Katie Ritter scored four goals for the Panthers (1-0), who took an 8-3 halftime lead against the Bobcats (1-1) in a NESCAC opener at Lewiston.

Joan O’Neill and Blair Shrewsbury each had three goals for Bates.
