BOZEMAN, Mont. – Lucy Garrec of Freeport, a senior at Vermont, finished third in a 15-kilometer classical race Friday as the Catamounts built a commanding lead going into the final day of the NCAA skiing championships.
Garrec, who was fourth in a freestyle race on Wednesday, had a time of 53 minutes, 48.7 seconds — 16.6 seconds behind teammate Amy Glen, who edged Dartmouth’s Sophie Caldwell by one-tenth of a second.
Beth Taylor finished 26th and Hallie Grossman was 32nd for Bates.
In the men’s 20K classical, Sam Tarling of Cumberland, a junior at Dartmouth, was ninth in 57:41.8. Miles Havlick of Utah won it in 56:24.3.
Tarling placed third in the 10K freestyle on Wednesday.
Jordan Buetow of Bates finished 38th.
Vermont had 614 points after six events, followed by Utah (522) and Dartmouth (510), with only men’s and women’s slalom remaining.
INDOOR TRACK
NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS: Bowdoin won the men’s distance medley relay in the Division III championships at Grinnell, Iowa.
The Polar Bears’ quartet of Coby Horowitz, Matthew Gamache, Colin Fong and Matthew Hillard posted a time of 9:59.67 — three-hundredths of a second ahead of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
Bates finished third in 10:00.37 with the team of Nick Barron, Ben Levy James LePage, Noah Graboys.
David Pless of Bates was fifth in the weight throw with a toss of 63 feet, 2¾ inches, and the Bobcats took eighth in the women’s medley relay.
BASEBALL
ILLINOIS STATE 7, MAINE 1: The Red Birds (8-3) scored all their runs in their final four at-bats against the Black Bears (4-7) at Winter Haven, Fla.
Michael Fransoso had two hits and Troy Black had an RBI groundout for Maine.
SOFTBALL
CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE 2, MAINE 1: Mia Pagano pitched a two-hitter and Jaci Carlsen doubled home the go-ahead run in the fifth inning for the Matadors (5-16) at Northridge, Calif.
Maine got its run in the third when Emj Fogel doubled, moved to third on a sacrifice by Lindsey Jenkins and scored on an error.
CSU BAKERSFIELD 14, MAINE 0: The Roadrunners (5-12) scored eight runs in the fifth inning to force the mercy rule against the Black Bears (4-13) at Northridge, Calif.
Jennifer Eberhardt doubled and Dagmar Ralphs had a single Maine.
