BOSTON – The Boston Bruins got their backup goaltender.

According to WEEI.com, Marty Turco cleared waivers Wednesday and joined the Bruins for their practice at Ristuccia Arena.

Turco was signed Monday, but had to clear waivers before joining the Bruins.

Turco was needed when Tuukka Rask was hurt in last Saturday’s game against the New York Islanders. He will be out 4 to 6 weeks with an abdomen strain/groin strain.

WEDNESDAY’S GAMES

SABRES 3, HURRICANES 2: Jason Pominville scored on a power play 56 seconds into overtime to give Buffalo a win over visiting Carolina.

Thomas Vanek and Tyler Myers also scored to help the Sabres jump into a tie with Washington for ninth place in the Eastern Conference. Ryan Miller stopped 22 shots, and Pominville also had an assist.

Jaroslav Spacek and Chad LaRose scored for the Hurricanes, 2-1-4 in their past seven games.

PENGUINS 3, MAPLE LEAFS 2: Pascal Dupuis scored twice and had an assist, and host Pittsburgh rallied to beat slumping Toronto for its seventh straight victory.

Jordan Staal added a goal and an assist to extend his points streak to a career-best six games and rookie Brad Thiessen stopped 22 shots.

The Penguins won for the 11th time in their last 12 home games to strengthen their hold on fourth place in the Eastern Conference.

Phil Kessel and Carl Gunnarsson scored for Toronto. The Maple Leafs let an early two-goal lead slip away while falling to 1-2 since Randy Carlyle took over as coach following Ron Wilson’s firing.

Carlyle’s hiring was supposed to rejuvenate a team that has fallen to the fringe of the playoff picture over the last month. Toronto beat Montreal on Saturday night in his first game behind the bench, but there has been no bounce. The Maple Leafs have lost 6 of 7 and are five points behind eighth-place Winnipeg in the playoff race.
