Messi sets record with five goals, helping Barcelona advance in Champions League

Lionel Messi scored a record five goals in Barcelona’s 7-1 thrashing of Bayer Leverkusen Wednesday to sweep the title holders into the Champions League quarterfinals in London.

Messi became the first player to score more than four goals in a match in Europe’s elite club competition, and Barcelona sealed a 10-2 aggregate win.

In the night’s other match, APOEL beat Lyon 4-3 on penalties after the two-legged match finished 1-1 on aggregate.

Barcelona and APOEL join AC Milan and Benfica in the quarterfinals.

MLS: Arne Friedrich, a veteran of the German team at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, signed with the Chicago Fire.

ALGARVE CUP: Alex Morgan scored her first career hat trick and Abby Wambach added her 134th goal, leading the United States over Sweden 4-0 in the third-place match at Parchal, Portugal.

DOG SLED RACING

IDITAROD: Four-time Iditarod champion Martin Buser grabbed the lead by staying just two minutes in the checkpoint at Takotna, 329 miles from Anchorage. He was followed by his 22-year-old son, Rohn, who also stopped briefly to move into second place.

The front-runners appeared to be resting their teams in Takotna. The race requires teams to take one 24-hour stop during the race. Many choose Takotna, which is known for its hospitality and good food.

CROSS COUNTRY: Kikkan Randall added a World Cup crystal globe trophy to her stash and carved out another slice of history for the U.S. ski team, clinching the overall sprint title to become the first American in 30 years to win a cross country championship.

Randall, 29, from Anchorage, finished 11th in a race in Norway to secure the championship with one race left this season.

SMAA ALL-STAR GAMES: Justin Pollard of Thornton Academy scored 30 points to lead the White to a 128-106 victory over the Blue in the boys’ game at South Portland.

Pollard was 11 for 21 from the field, including 8 of 13 from the 3-point arc. Peter Donato of Portland added 28 points and Nguot Ngout of Westbrook finished with 20.

Carter Bowers of Gorham led the Blue with 34 points.

In the girls’ game, Meghan Agger of Thornton Academy scored 18 points to lead the White to an 80-62 win.

Megan Gribbin of Windham chipped in 14 points and Ella Ramonas of Deering had 13 for the White.

Alexa Coulombe of McAuley and Jordan Mitchell of Marshwood each scored 16 points for the Blue.
