Free tax help

AARP provides free tax help to older citizens and those with low incomes. In Windham, these sessions are held at Unity Gardens, 124 Tandberg Trail on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 2-7 p.m. Appointments are required. Call 894-5110.

Thrift shop sale

The thrift shop in the basement of the North Windham Union Church has received new baby clothes – really for infants. In great condition, these are available now at extremely reasonable pricing. Visit the shop from 1-3 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday or 10 a.m. until noon Saturdays.

Learn how to cope

On Thursdays, from March 8 to April 12, workshops will be held at Windham High School to help participants learn how to cope with health challenges such as tiredness, pain, stress and feeling “down.” Living Well for Better Health workshops, proven to work for people with arthritis, chronic pain, diabetes and other lifelong health problems include topics such as managing pain and fatigue, eating well, ways to get active and tips on talking with your doctor and family. Windham Community Garden taking apps

Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or beginner, if you are looking for a place to grow great produce and enjoy the tranquility of gardening, the Windham Community Garden is for you. Applications are now being taken, through March 31, for a 10×20-foot garden bed. VFW meeting change

VFW Post 10643 will not meet on March 14. Instead, there will be a very special meeting to install the new Post Commander and Officers on Sunday, March 25, at 1 p.m. at Gilbert’s Chowder House, Windham.

Free clothes

Windham’s Free Clothes Closet is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday. A great selection of clothing for all ages including adults is available including hats, jackets and coats, shoes and women’s handbags; other items include books for all ages, some games and linens. Food drive

Big Lots in North Windham is holding a food drive through March 11 to benefit the Windham Food Pantry. Donations may be dropped at the store.

Cinderella at Windham Center Stage

“Cinderella,” a musical presented by Windham Center Stage Theater, 8 School Road, Windham features 75 local children. Showtime begins on Friday, March 9, and runs through March 25. Show times are 7 p.m. Fridays, 2 and 7 p.m. Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays. All seats reserved. Tickets range from $5 to $10. Call 893-2098.

Veterans help available

Veterans Service Officer Phyllis D’Orsay will be at the Windham Veterans Center on Wednesday morning, March 14, to assist veterans, widows of veterans and dependents with questions about benefits and other information. If you have questions of a military nature, stop in and get some answers. The Veterans Center is off Route 302, on Memorial Drive, to the back of Hannaford and right of Lowe’s. No appointment is needed.

Corned beef & cabbage

On Saturday, March 17, the Field Allen American Legion Post will hold a scholarship fund raiser, corned beef and cabbage dinner, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Windham Veterans Center. Cost per person will be $10 or $25 for a family. Proceeds will be used for local high school scholarships.

Benefits available

Every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Owen O’Donnell, benefit specialist from SMAA will be at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church to provide information and assistance on a variety of benefits including fuel assistance, food stamps, tax and rent rebate and more. Call 396-6500 to make an appointment.

Senior Center

Lakes Region Senior Center, 40 Acorn Street, Gorham, offers a host of activities Monday through Thursday. The Senior Center is open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Drop in and find out about this resource for seniors. Schedule for following week is: Cribbage and coffee on Monday, March 12; card games, exercise video and knitting on Tuesday, March 13; poker and dominos on Wednesday, March 14; Public pot luck lunch ($2 suggested donation) St. Patrick’s Day party and entertainment on Thursday, March 15.

Pancakes for technology

Manchester Elementary School on Route 302 in North Windham is holding a pancake breakfast at Applebee’s on Saturday, March 31, from 8-9:30 a.m. Tickets are $5 each. Summer Fest needs your help

Windham’s annual community celebration, Summer Fest, is scheduled to be held the weekend of June 23 when a big parade will take place and many other activities are planned. To succeed, volunteers are needed to make it happen. The committee meets monthly until spring, then twice a month, at the town hall. Alumni banquet

Windham High School Alumni Association will hold its annual banquet on Saturday, May 19, at the middle school. Doors open at 4 p.m. and dinner will be at 6 p.m. Volunteers are sought to bake cupcakes – contact Susan Simonson at ssimons1@maine.rr.com. This year’s class honorees are the Class of 1962 (50 years) and the Class of 1987 (25 years). If your class would like to reserve a large table, contact Sam Simonson at sam6941@yahoo.com for details. Baked bean supper

On Saturday, April 7, a baked bean supper will be held at White Rock Community Club, Wilson Road in Gorham. The public is invited to these “first Saturday” suppers held January through June, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. The menu includes two kinds of beans (pea and kidney), cole slaw, potato salad, macaroni and cheese, home made biscuits and pies. Adults, $7; children under 12, $3.
