NEW ON DVD AND BLU-RAY

“FOOTLOOSE,” starring Kenny Wormald and Julianne Hough. That’s right, it’s a remake of the 1984 Kevin Bacon dance movie, which couldn’t possibly have come out almost 30 years ago, could it? Director Craig Brewer (“Hustle and Flow”) stages an all-too-faithful retread, right down to the soundtrack and the infamous “angry dancing” scene, and while the music remains infectious, one wonders why we need this “Footloose” when we already had a perfectly good (or, failing that, entertaining) one to being with. Rated PG-13. Running time: 1:53

Suggested retail price: $29.99; Blu-ray $44.99

“IMMORTALS,” starring Henry Cavill and Mickey Rourke. This action-movie take on Greek mythology is unlikely to impress any scholars on the subject with its attention to accuracy, but is a whole lot of fun to watch, with some amazing CGI effects bringing to life the battle between power-hungry King Hyperion (Rourke) and plucky warrior (Theseus), both out to get their hands on a magical bow. Special features include alternate endings and deleted scenes. Rated R. Running time: 1:50

Suggested retail price: $29.98; Blu-ray $39.99

“JACK AND JILL,” starring Adam Sandler and Katie Holmes. Typically lowbrow gagfest from Sandler finds the funnyman dusting off the old same-actor-playing-twins and man-in-drag routines all at once as he plays both aggravated ad exec Jack and his emotionally needy sister Jill, whose Thanksgiving visits prove an annual source of irritation for Jack. Just about as dumb as it sounds, but there are a number of laughs to be had here and there. Rated PG. Running time: 1:31

“GAME OF THRONES: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON,” starring Sean Bean and Mark Addy. HBO gives the people what they want — in this case, plenty of violence and nudity — in this hugely popular fantasy series, based on author George R.R. Martin’s saga “A Song of Fire and Ice.” Set in the fictional and magical kingdom of Westeros, the series is a “World of Warcraft” fan’s dream come true with dragons, wizards and acts of derring-do and villainy, but also skewed with HBO’s knack for addictive, continuing drama. Not rated; contains graphic violence, nudity and sexual content. Running time: 9:21

Suggested retail price: $59.99; Blu-ray $79.98

NEW TO BLU-RAY

“THE DEER HUNTER,” starring Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken and Meryl Streep. Widely considered one of the finest war movies ever made, this disturbing and intimate 1978 drama from director Michael Cimino made bona fide stars out of De Niro and Walken and reevaluated the entire genre, eliminating the heroics and focusing on the grim horrors and unthinkable situations men faced during the Vietnam War. Generally remembered for its infamous Russian roulette scene (still every bit as sickeningly powerful), this remastering is an ideal chance to introduce yourself to or reacquaint yourself with an enduring classic. Rated R. Running time: 3:02

Suggested retail price: $19.98

“MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL,” starring John Cleese and Michael Palin. A film that needs no introduction for most, particularly comedy enthusiasts, this 1975 King Arthur spoof from the pioneering British comedy troupe is every bit as hilarious today — no matter how many people try to quote it to death. This special edition Blu-ray is packed with special features, including commentaries and deleted scenes. Rated PG. Running time: 1:31

Suggested retail price: 19.99

VIDEOPORT PICKS

“LIKE CRAZY,” starring Felicity Jones and Anton Yelchin. Not your average windswept, frothy teen romance, “Like Crazy” presents us with a realistic, relatable couple in Jones and Yelchin, a very much in love pair trying to make a long-distance relationship work in spite of numerous setbacks and obstacles. Viewers expecting another “(500) Days of Summer” or “Garden State” may be put off by the utter lack of whimsy on display, but writer-director Drake Doremus thankfully has no interest in pat resolutions or fulfilling audience expectations. Rated PG-13. Running time: 1:30

Suggested retail price: $29.99; Blu-ray $39.99

“THE SKIN I LIVE IN,” starring Antonio Banderas and Elena Anaya. Yet another stylish mindbender from the ever-dependable Pedro Almodovar, this time around focusing on brilliant plastic surgeon Robert Ledgard (Banderas), a distinctly strange doctor who is in the process of developing a synthetic skin that’s impervious to any kind of physical damage. Helping him in this endeavor, though perhaps not entirely willingly, is Vera (Anaya), who models and wears the skin to test it out, seemingly held hostage in Ledgard’s home for this purpose. Highly recommended for fans of the cinematically unusual. Rated R for disturbing violent content including sexual assault, strong sexuality, graphic nudity, drug use and language. Running time: 1:57.

Suggested retail price: $45.99; Blu-ray $45.99
