BRUNSWICK — Brunswick-based construction firm Ouellet Associates has withdrawn its application to serve as the construction manager for a project that would build a new Brunswick police station.

The Town Council will tonight consider authorizing Town Manager Gary Brown to negotiate a contract for preconstruction services on the project with Ledgewood Construction of South Portland.

The council also will consider signing a letter of intent to hire Ledgewood for full management of the project, should it be approved by the council at a future date.

Ledgewood oversaw construction of the Curtis Memorial Library expansion and the Harriet Beecher Stowe School. The firm also has built other recent public projects, including the public library in Portland and that city’s Ocean Avenue Elementary school, according the firm’s website.

Mike Ouellet, president of Ouellet Associates, said this morning that his company and the town “just couldn’t come to terms” on a final contract.

“Given the importance of the project, we thought it was best for the project and the town if we stepped aside,” Ouellet said. “These things happen, unfortunately.”

In the company’s proposal to the town, Ouellet offered pre-construction services at no charge, citing that offer “as a donation to our community” based on “serious interest in this project.”

Brown’s memo indicates that pre-construction services with Ledgewood will total $15,000, if approved.

Brown’s memo indicates that a project budget is still scheduled to be completed by the end of March with the project’s architecture firm, Donham & Sweeney.
